Gotham Underworld Heist

Once upon a time, Bane decided to plan the biggest heist of his entire career, and for a job this large, he knew he would need a team.

He chose his partners carefully, for one simple reason: none of them were foolish enough to disobey him. Two-Face agreed to handle the money, quietly moving it through a dozen shell companies scattered across Gotham City. Penguin agreed to supply weapons, along with a getaway route through the private docks beneath his own Iceberg Lounge. And Bane, as always, provided the muscle, the master plan, and one single, unbreakable rule: everyone follows the schedule exactly as written, or the entire plan falls apart completely.

Their target was the underground vault at Gotham National Bank, a fortune large enough that the three villains planned to split it evenly, three ways. In the weeks before the heist, Bane timed everything with tremendous care — every guard's shift, every sweep of every security camera, every delivery truck rolling past the bank's loading dock — all of it mapped down to the very minute, the way a grandmaster memorizes a favorite chess opening until it becomes second nature. He even rehearsed a backup escape route through the storm drains beneath the bank, just in case the main tunnel ever collapsed, because a plan without a backup, Bane liked to say, was really no plan at all.

And for eleven whole minutes, on the night of the heist itself, the plan worked exactly as Bane had drawn it.

Then, deep beneath Gotham City, a silent alarm triggered by Commissioner Gordon's careful officers sent a signal racing all the way to the Batcave. Batman arrived precisely on schedule too — though, of course, not the schedule Bane had so carefully planned for. He swung down through a skylight above the vault, quick and quiet, taking out Penguin's getaway crew first, before Two-Face and Bane even realized he had arrived. That left the two villains staring at each other across an open vault door, the fortune spilled uselessly across the marble floor between them.

Bane did not panic. He never did, no matter the situation. Instead, he calculated the odds calmly, the way he calculated everything, and quickly realized that fighting Batman while also trying to guard an unpredictable partner like Two-Face was a losing position on any chessboard. Chasing the fortune any further would mean risking a fight he had not planned for, on ground he no longer controlled — and Bane never fought a battle he had not already planned. So, without wasting another moment, Bane grabbed Two-Face firmly by the collar, hauled him bodily toward the nearest exit, and used his own enormous strength to punch clean through a heavy service door, rather than waiting around for the fight to catch up to him.

Behind them, Batman calmly recovered the entire fortune, piece by piece, and within the hour, officers from the Gotham City Police Department had rounded up every last member of Penguin's getaway crew, safely and without incident.

Later that night, tucked away in a quiet hideout beneath the city's old docks, Bane sat and reviewed everything that had happened, exactly the way he reviewed every plan, successful or not. Partners had let him down before, back when he worked with Riddler. And now, it seemed, they had let him down again.

It confirmed something Bane had suspected for a very long time, something he turned over slowly in his mind as he listened to the waves outside. The biggest weakness in any plan he ever built was never truly Batman, clever as the Dark Knight certainly was. The real weakness was always whoever happened to be standing beside Bane the moment Batman finally arrived.

He decided, quietly and firmly, that the next great plan he built would be his alone to carry out — no partners, no shell companies, no unpredictable escape routes he couldn't fully control. Just Bane, and the plan, and whatever came next.

Far above him, in the tall tower of Gotham National Bank, Batman locked the recovered fortune safely away and looked out over the glittering city, wondering, not for the first time, just how many more plans Bane had waiting somewhere in that patient, careful mind of his. Quite a few, as it turned out — and every single one of them would need to be solved, one puzzle at a time.
