Legacy Lesson

Once upon a time, in the shining city of Metropolis, the sky tore open one last time.

Darkseid had tried before to conquer Earth, and every time, he had failed — driven back by Superman, by Wonder Woman, by heroes who would not kneel. So this time, Darkseid tried something bigger than ever before. He would use Earth itself — every mind on the whole wide planet, dreaming and choosing freely — to finally solve the secret he wanted more than anything: the Anti-Life Equation.

A great Boom Tube split the clouds above the Daily Planet building, wider than any before it. Parademons poured through by the hundreds, their armored wings beating like far-off thunder. And on top of the Daily Planet's shining globe, Darkseid set a strange, humming machine. He called it the Equation Engine.

Down below, the people of Metropolis looked up, frightened. But they were not alone for long.

Superman arrived first, streaking through the clouds. Then Wonder Woman, and Batman, and Cyborg with his glowing Mother Box, and the Flash in a blur of red lightning, and Aquaman rising from the harbor. The whole Justice League, ready to stand between Darkseid and the world they loved.

And then something wonderful happened, something that had never happened before.

A second Boom Tube opened, glowing gold instead of orange, and through it came the New Gods of New Genesis. Highfather Izaya walked first, calm and shining. Beside him came Lightray, who moved so fast he looked like a streak of gold across the sky. Big Barda strode forward, swinging her Mega-Rod, fierce and sure. And Mister Miracle, the great escape artist, slipped free of every trap the Parademons tried to set, smiling the whole time.

Two worlds — Earth and New Genesis — stood together, side by side, for the very first time in history.

And then someone else stepped forward. Someone Darkseid knew better than anyone in the universe.

His own son. Orion.

Orion walked across the rooftop until he stood exactly between his father and the humming Equation Engine. He was not afraid. He looked up at Darkseid, stone-grey and towering, eyes glowing like twin coals, and he said, quiet but clear:

"I was born on Apokolips. But I choose New Genesis. I choose them."

Darkseid's eyes burned brighter. "You are my blood," he said, his voice rumbling like a mountain settling deep in the earth.

Orion did not step back. "Blood was never the choice," he said gently. "Kindness is."

Darkseid roared, and the battle began in earnest. His Omega Beams tore streaks of red light across the sky. Parademons swarmed the tower. But this time, for every beam Darkseid fired, a hero or a New God was ready. Wonder Woman crossed her silver bracelets, and the beams scattered like sparks off a bell. Cyborg's Mother Box reached into the Equation Engine and scrambled its signal from the inside. And Lightray and the Flash — the fastest hero of Earth and the fastest New God of New Genesis — circled the machine together, a blur of gold and scarlet, until it sparked, shuddered, and broke apart into a thousand harmless, glittering pieces, drifting down over Metropolis like fireworks.

Darkseid staggered backward, and for the first time in his very long life, he understood something new. His stone will — the will that had bent a hundred worlds to fear and obedience — could not force a single mind here to bow. Not a hero's mind. Not a New God's mind. Not even the mind of one small child standing far below, looking up not with fear, but with hope.

"Impossible," Darkseid growled.

Orion walked closer to his father, unafraid, gentle even now. "Not impossible," he said. "Just something you never understood, Father. Not everyone who is strong needs to be feared. Some of us would rather be kind."

Darkseid said nothing for a long moment. Then, with a sound like distant thunder, he raised his hand, and one final Boom Tube opened behind him, swirling and orange against the blue sky.

He stepped backward through it, looking smaller somehow, diminished, though not finished — Apokolips was still out there, waiting, and Darkseid was not a tyrant who gave up forever. Someday, he would try again.

But not today.

Today, in the settling dust above Metropolis, heroes from Earth and New Gods from New Genesis stood together in the sunlight, two worlds united as one. And everyone who watched — every hero, every New God, every ordinary person on the street below — learned the same true lesson.

A tyrant's power can tear the sky open. It can be loud, and frightening, and vast.

But kindness, chosen freely, and friends who choose to stand together — that is stronger still. It always has been. It always will be.

And so, above the towers of Metropolis, the story of Darkseid's greatest defeat came to a gentle close — not with fear winning, but with love, and choice, and togetherness, winning instead.

The end.
