Willpower Unleashed

Most of the time, when Hal Jordan used his power ring, he did it the same way any Green Lantern did. He thought of a shape. The ring read his thoughts. The shape appeared in green light.

A shield. A net. A sword. A bridge.

Useful. Practical. Beautiful.

But there were a few rare moments — moments when the universe itself was about to fall apart — when something different happened. Something Hal could not quite explain, even to Kilowog. In those moments, Hal would push past the limits of the ring, past the limits of his own body, and tap into a place deep inside himself that he had not known existed.

The Lanterns had a name for it. They called it Willpower Unleashed.

The first time it happened was on a mission to the heart of a sentient nebula. A great living cloud of stars and gas had begun to EAT entire solar systems, swallowing them whole. The pressure inside the nebula was enormous, enough to crush even the strongest constructs. Hal flew in alone, his green light flickering against the dark.

His shields began to fail. The ring's energy dimmed. He felt his focus slipping like sand through his fingers.

He thought about the billions of lives back on the worlds the nebula had already eaten.

He thought about Earth. About Carol Ferris's face. About his brother Jim. About a little girl he had once carried out of a fire.

And then — without willing it, without planning it — a white-hot light ignited deep in his chest. Not green. WHITER. Hotter. Truer.

His ring did not just glow. It EXPLODED with light.

In that moment, Hal was not building a construct. He was reshaping reality itself.

He summoned a massive emerald sun in the middle of the dark nebula. Its light burned outward in all directions, pushing back the gravity, healing the wounded space, calming the angry living cloud. The power did not come from the Central Power Battery anymore. It came from HIM. From the unbroken depths of one human spirit that refused to give up.

The nebula receded. The systems were saved. Hal floated alone in the silent vastness, his body steaming with green light, and for a long moment he could not move at all.

That was the first time. There were others.

When the Unleashed power came over him, his whole way of fighting changed. He no longer needed to think of specific shapes. Raw waves of green energy rolled off him in response to his every breath. He moved faster than he had ever moved, his form trailing emerald streaks across the stars like a comet.

There was a time, when an ancient cosmic being called Volthoom — the First Lantern, older and stranger than any other ringbearer — was bending reality around the Corps like cloth. Volthoom could change history with a thought. Lanterns could not even land a punch on him.

But when Hal unleashed his willpower, Volthoom's reality-bending stopped working on him. Willpower, it turned out, was the one thing the First Lantern could not control. Hal walked through Volthoom's twisting illusions as if they were mist. He dismantled the villain piece by piece, his light unwavering.

But Unleashed Willpower had a price. A heavy one.

Every time Hal used it, it drained his life force. It left him exhausted, his hands trembling, his bones aching, his ring quiet. He would sleep for days afterward. He could not eat for a while. He came back, but he came back tired.

There was also a danger in the other direction — the danger of LIKING it too much. When you can reshape reality, it is very easy to feel like a god. It is very easy to start looking at the small fragile lives below you as if they were ants. Hal had to fight that, too. He had to keep coming home. He had to keep talking to his brother on the phone. He had to keep eating breakfast at his favorite Coast City diner and tipping the waitress and feeling the sun on his face like an ordinary man.

The Guardians of the Universe were nervous about Unleashed Willpower. They preferred their Lanterns predictable. Controlled. Quiet. But they had to admit that when everything else failed, it was Hal's wildest, deepest light that saved the day.

He was their wild card. Their last resort. Their hope.

Late one evening — far away from any planet, drifting in the gentle silence between the stars — Hal floated alone, his ring pulsing softly with his heartbeat. Green. Green. Green.

He was tired. He was at peace.

He had learned, after many years and many battles, that willpower was not really about pushing OTHER things. It was about not pushing yourself AWAY from your own heart. It was about choosing, over and over, what you cared about, and refusing — gently, stubbornly, eternally — to let go.

The universe stretched out around him in every direction, dark and vast and full of dangers.

But Hal Jordan held up his ring. And it glowed.

In brightest day. In blackest night.

His resolve was infinite.
