Sinestro Corps War
Once upon a time, far out among the stars, past a planet called Korugar, there lived a being named Sinestro. Long ago, Sinestro had worn a green ring and stood among the bravest heroes in the galaxy, trusted and admired by everyone who knew him. But that was a long time ago, and Sinestro had changed. Now he wore a yellow ring instead, and he believed something sad and mistaken: that fear could rule the universe better than courage ever could.
Sinestro spent many quiet years building something enormous, out where no one could see. He gathered soldiers from faraway worlds — the angriest ones, the loneliest ones, the ones who had forgotten what it felt like to be brave. He gave each of them a yellow power ring, forged by strange smiths called the Weaponers of Qward, and he named his army the Sinestro Corps. He trained them just as carefully as he had once trained a young pilot named Hal Jordan, long ago, back when Sinestro still believed in doing good.
When his army was finally ready, Sinestro turned his gaze toward one small, round planet at the very center of the universe. Its name was Oa. Oa was home to the Green Lantern Corps, and to the wise, ancient beings called the Guardians of the Universe, who had watched over the galaxy since before anyone could remember. Sinestro pointed his whole army toward Oa, and gave the order to attack.
It happened all at once. The sky above Oa split open, and thousands upon thousands of yellow rings poured through. Yellow-light wolves came snarling down from the clouds. Yellow-light giants stomped toward the shining towers where the Guardians lived. Sinestro floated above it all, watching calmly, the way a general watches a battle he is sure he will win. For just a moment, it seemed as though fear itself might cover the whole planet.
But down below, something else was happening too. Hal Jordan — the very pilot Sinestro had once trained — lifted his green ring into the air. He called out to every Green Lantern who could hear him, and one by one, they answered. Lanterns from a thousand different worlds came flying to his side: tall ones and small ones, old ones and young ones, every single one of them ready to stand together.
Where a yellow wolf snapped its jaws, three green shields rose up to meet it. Where a yellow giant crashed toward the Guardians' tower, Hal and his friends wove a great net of green light and held it steady, all of them pulling together at once. Fear could strike hard, and fear could strike fast, but fear could not hold on the way trust could. Trust was patient. Trust was strong. And trust, it turned out, did not break.
Slowly, so slowly that at first nobody could quite believe it, the battle began to turn. The Green Lantern Corps pushed forward, step by step, construct meeting construct, courage meeting fear. Sinestro's soldiers began to waver. Some scattered. Some simply stopped, unsure of what to do without their leader's voice in their ear, since fear, once it starts to crack, has trouble holding itself together. And high above it all, Sinestro watched his great army come apart, piece by piece, like a sandcastle meeting the tide.
He had built the biggest army fear could buy. He had planned for years. He had trained his soldiers as carefully as he once trained Hal Jordan himself. And still, in the end, it was not enough. With one last furious flash of yellow light, Sinestro tore open a doorway in space and slipped away, leaving his invasion behind, unfinished and undone.
Oa was left standing — a little scorched, a little weary, but standing tall and proud beneath the stars. The towers still shone. The Guardians were safe, and the great battle was finally, truly over. And every Green Lantern who had fought that day understood something worth remembering: an army built only on fear can look enormous and feel unstoppable, right up until the moment it meets an army built on trust, patience, and thousands of friends who refuse to let go of one another.
And so, high above the little planet called Oa, the Green Lantern Corps rested at last, side by side, friend beside friend — safe, together, and unafraid.
