Always Defeated
Once upon a time, long before anyone ever heard the name "Sinestro" spoken with fear, there was a Green Lantern named Thaal Sinestro, and he was the finest Green Lantern the Corps had ever known.
He patrolled the stars around his home planet, Korugar, with more skill and more courage than almost anyone else in the galaxy. He was so trusted, so respected, that the wise Guardians of the Universe gave him something precious: a new recruit to train, a human test pilot named Hal Jordan. Sinestro taught Hal everything he knew. He taught him how to use his ring. He taught him how to be brave even when he felt small. He taught him that a Green Lantern's job was to protect others, not to rule over them. For a long while, Sinestro was exactly the hero the whole galaxy believed him to be.
But slowly, quietly, something inside Sinestro began to change. He started to believe a sad and mistaken idea: that people were too messy, too unpredictable, too hard to trust. He decided it would be simpler, easier, safer, if everyone just obeyed him instead — not because they wanted to, but because they were afraid not to. He used his green ring to become the secret ruler of his own home planet, Korugar, and for a while, no one stopped him.
But the Guardians of the Universe found out. And when they did, they made a hard decision. They took Sinestro's ring away, and they cast him out of the Green Lantern Corps he had once led with such pride. Just like that, Sinestro lost his home. He lost his rank. And, saddest of all, he lost his student — the very pilot he had trained so carefully — who grew up to become the Green Lantern sworn to stop him, whenever his old teacher went too far.
Sinestro did not give up, though. He never does. He found a new ring, a yellow one, glowing with fear instead of courage, forged far away by the Weaponers of Qward. He built an army out of the angriest, loneliest beings he could find, and called it the Sinestro Corps. He made plan after plan, each one cleverer than the last. He led his whole army against Oa itself, in the biggest battle the galaxy had ever seen. He built weapons, he built schemes, he built empires of fear that seemed, for a moment, unstoppable.
And every single time, Sinestro lost.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps stood together, over and over, and every time, fear cracked apart against the simple, stubborn strength of friends who trusted one another. It happened at Oa. It happened again and again after that. No matter how brilliant Sinestro's plan, no matter how powerful his ring, the ending was always the same: Sinestro, defeated, flying off alone into the dark.
Here is the secret hiding at the center of Sinestro's whole long story, the thing worth remembering long after the story ends: a yellow ring can make one being feel powerful, for a little while, all by himself. But a green ring is different. A green ring, shared among thousands of friends across a thousand different worlds, never has to stand alone. Fear can make someone jump, or freeze, or run — but fear fades fast, like a shadow the moment a light switches on. Courage does not fade that way. Courage, carried by people who trust each other, only grows stronger every time it is tested.
That is why Sinestro, for all his cleverness, was always defeated. And it is why Hal Jordan, and every Green Lantern who ever stood beside him, carries a lesson forward that Sinestro never quite learned: that real strength was never about being feared. It was always about being trusted.
So if you are ever lying here, a little worried about something, a little unsure, think of Sinestro's whole long story, from the very beginning to this very end: the cleverest villain in the galaxy, beaten again and again, not by a bigger ring or a brighter light, but by ordinary courage and caring, shared between friends. That is the strongest light there is in the whole wide universe. And you already carry it, right there inside you — no ring required, not now, not ever. Sleep well, and shine on.
