The Dark Aster

When the Milano flew into the shadow of the Dark Aster, everyone aboard went quiet.

It was that kind of shadow. The kind that makes you take stock of what you have and what you are.

The Dark Aster was the size of a city — covered from bow to stern in Kree war-scripture, ancient text carved in furious rows. Ronan had built it to announce itself before it arrived, so that dread could do its work first. Flying into its shadow felt like flying into the mouth of something that had never lost.

Peter turned up the Walkman. The music settled in his chest and made him feel, if not brave, then at least pointed the right way. That was enough to begin.

They came in through Rocket's hull breach while outside, the Nova Corps flew in tight gold-and-white formation and Yondu's Ravagers held the flanks in a battle that lit up the sky over Xandar.

Inside, the team split. They had planned it. Nothing left to say.

Gamora moved through the corridors with the certainty of someone who had been here before — fast and quiet, sword drawn. She had walked these halls once as Ronan's ally. She walked them now as something else.

Drax went for Korath, methodical and certain. Peter and Rocket went for the power coupling, arguing in hushed voices about electrical access panels the whole way, because even now Rocket had opinions about junction diagrams he couldn't suppress.

Groot moved through the ship like weather — quiet, spreading, filling corridors with reaching arms and the patient authority of something that knows how to fill a space.

Gamora found Nebula in a long corridor and they stood still for one second — two people trained by the same terrible teacher, shaped by the same hard years, who had fought back to back for so long before the complicated fact of growing in opposite directions finally separated them. Then Nebula reached for her weapon. The fight that followed was fast and close and full of old history. Gamora won, barely. Nebula fell through a grate and caught a Ravager ship below and disappeared into the battle. Gamora kept moving.

Then Rocket brought his mining vessel back under the Dark Aster's belly and killed the engines. WHOOOM. The whole warship shuddered and went dark and silent. The Dark Aster — all its immense weight and terrible purpose — was falling.

Groot felt it first.

He began to grow. Not the small helpful growing of earlier. This was everything — arms spreading wide, branches thickening, his whole body weaving into a cage around his teammates. A cocoon of living wood that could absorb what no armor could, built from the most solid and generous thing he was made of.

Rocket reached him and understood immediately and said no with his whole face.

Groot placed one long branch gently on Rocket's head.

"We are Groot," he said.

The Dark Aster hit Xandar. The crash shook the whole city. Four people were held safe in a cradle of wood and warmth.

When the dust settled, Groot was gone. Ronan walked from the wreckage with the Power Stone blazing in his fist.

Peter stepped forward and grabbed the Stone.

The energy hit him everywhere at once — not just heat but pressure, through all of him, lighting up every nerve and thought. He lasted three seconds. Then Gamora's hand on his arm, and the fire split between two. Then Drax. Then Rocket, running across the rubble without calculating anything, because this was one thing he was not going to talk himself out of.

Four people. One shared impossible weight. Survivable through sharing, the way it always had to be.

Peter held on. He thought about his mother's tape. About the warmth of it carried across so much space and time.

The Stone's fire went outward. Ronan was gone.

Xandar breathed in the quiet.

In the rubble, Rocket found a small green sprout pushing up through the dust. He knelt and held it in both hands for a long time, the way you hold something precious.

Some battles you win because you are strong enough. And some you win because you are loved enough — because when the weight becomes too much for one person, someone always reaches across to share it.

Rest now. You are held.
