Thanos Shadow

There is a story behind every story.

The story of the Guardians begins with a prison and a chase and a battle over white spires. But behind it — older and slower — is a story about a name.

Thanos.

Say it quietly, if you say it at all.

On some worlds it is spoken like a prayer, by people who believe in him the way others believe in storms — inevitable, to be prepared for. On other worlds it is a curse. On the worlds that have seen what he leaves behind, it is said the way you name a mountain range: simply a fact, enormous and indifferent.

Thanos had been patient for longer than most civilizations had existed. He was assembling something piece by piece — and the pieces were the six Infinity Stones, ancient powers scattered across the universe. Together they could change everything. Permanently.

He had sent Gamora to find the Power Stone. When she refused to deliver it to him, he sent Ronan instead. He had shaped Nebula through years of training that was never gentle and never intended to be. He had been running this plan for longer than any of them had been alive, and he was still running it, patient as the dark between stars.

The Guardians had held the Power Stone. Peter still remembered the exact sensation of it — not just heat but a kind of total pressure, through all of him at once, every nerve and thought lit up simultaneously. He had lasted three seconds before it started to end him. It had taken four of them together, all sharing the weight, to survive what none of them could have survived alone.

Thanos wanted all six.

The intelligence arrived through a Kree contact of Gamora's in the port city of Hrax — a data drive passed across a market table without conversation or ceremony. Four Stones located and watched. Troop movements tightening around each one. An ancient plan that had been building for centuries, now clearly accelerating into something final.

"He's close," Gamora said. She never softened things, and there was no soft version of this.

Nebula confirmed it from memory — she had been in his planning rooms, had heard him speak of this. "Closer than close."

Rocket said he was excellent at flying fast and building weapons and solving problems most people called impossible, but this was not a heist or a problem. This was a centuries-long war.

Drax asked what could be done. He was not afraid of the answer. He simply needed to know it.

Peter stood at the viewport for a long time, looking at the stars, thinking about Xandar. About the moment the Power Stone had been in his hand and the fire had started and it had been killing him — and then his team had reached for him, each of them grabbing on without being asked, and the weight had been shared until it became something survivable. You cannot carry the impossible alone. That is not a failure of strength. That is simply the nature of the impossible — it requires more than one person. It always has.

"We can't stop this without more than us," he said. "We warn everyone who holds a Stone that Thanos is coming. We build allies — a network, whatever we can piece together. And through all of it, we stay together." He turned from the viewport. "That's where I am."

Groot reached one arm into the center of the table, palm up.

Gamora placed her hand on his. Drax added his, solid and certain. Nebula waited — deciding — then set hers down quietly. Rocket looked at the assembled hands with an expression of deep personal embarrassment. He added his anyway. Peter put his on top.

Five hands. One breath.

"Very dramatic," Rocket said.

"Yes," Peter agreed.

They held it one more second. Then they went to work — charting routes, making contacts, building toward whatever came next.

The shadow was vast and ancient and patient. But the Guardians were small and battered and mismatched and pointed at it together — and together was the only way the impossible had ever become survivable. They had already proven that over Xandar. They would prove it again.

Rest now. Someone is always keeping watch. The galaxy is in good hands.
