Mister Negative
Once upon a time, in the great city of New York, there lived a man that Eddie Brock loved very much.
His name was Martin Li.
You remember Martin, don't you? He was the gentle man with the healing white light called the Lightforce. It was Martin who had touched Eddie's shoulder and washed away his serious sickness. It was Martin's kind light that had helped create the white Anti-Venom symbiote. And every single day, Martin ran a warm little soup kitchen called F.E.A.S.T., where he fed the hungry and comforted the lonely and asked for nothing at all in return.
To Eddie, Martin Li was the kindest man in the whole wide city.
Which is why what Eddie learned next was so very hard to understand.
You see, dear one, Martin Li had a secret. And it was a big one.
Martin had two sides.
In the daylight, he was the good and gentle man that everyone loved. But hidden deep inside him lived a shadow-self — a cold figure with silver hair who called himself Mister Negative. And Mister Negative was nothing like Martin at all.
Where Martin's Lightforce healed and warmed and made things whole, Mister Negative's shadowy Darkforce did the opposite. It twisted things. It turned them cold and black and wrong. And Mister Negative was a sneaky crime boss who commanded a gang of masked fighters called the Inner Demons.
Eddie could hardly believe it. He shook his big white head. "How," he wondered, "can the very same man who saved my life also be the villain hiding in the dark corners of the city?"
It was a puzzle with no easy answer.
One night, deep in the tunnels beneath New York, Anti-Venom came face to face with the Inner Demons. And his heart, dear one, was all tangled up with feelings he could not sort out.
The masked fighters rushed at him from every side — wham, thud, thwip! But Anti-Venom was strong and quick. His white webs flew out — snap, snap, snap — and stuck the Inner Demons to the tunnel walls, one by one by one.
And then, from the deepest shadow, stepped Mister Negative himself, his hands crackling with cold Darkforce.
Eddie stopped.
Because that face — that was Martin's face. Those were the hands that had made him whole again.
"You healed me," Eddie said, very softly. "You gave me everything. Why are you like this?"
But Mister Negative only smiled a chilly little smile. For the shadow-self did not remember any of the kind and gentle things that the good half had done.
So they fought.
But it was a strange sort of battle, dear one. Because Eddie fought without any hate in his heart at all. Even now, even here, he could not bring himself to harm the good man he knew was hidden somewhere inside the villain. He blocked the cold Darkforce. He tangled the Inner Demons in soft white webbing. And he scattered the whole crew back into the darkness of the tunnels.
Mister Negative slipped away, quiet as a shadow, the way sneaky villains always seem to do. And the battle ended without a true winner at all.
Eddie climbed slowly back up into the cool New York night, thinking very hard about everything he had seen.
And here is what he decided, dear one. Listen closely, because it is a wise and gentle thought.
People are complicated.
The very same person can hold a healing light in one hand and a cold shadow in the other. It did not make Martin's kindness any less real. And it did not make Mister Negative's schemes okay, either. It only meant that even the people we look up to most are still finding their own way through the world — just the same way Eddie was still finding his.
Eddie owed Martin his very life. He would always be grateful. And he would still, without fail, stand against Mister Negative every single time the shadow rose up. Both of those things could be true at once.
And that, dear one, is one of the hardest and most important things a person can ever learn.
So snuggle down now, and let your thoughts grow soft and quiet. The tunnels are still. The city is calm. And a gentle white hero is walking home under the stars, a little wiser than he was before.
Goodnight, Eddie. Goodnight, Martin. Sleep well.
