Friendship Rocket

Once upon a time, two very different creatures met on a planet called Xandar, and became the best of friends.

The first was Groot: enormous as an ancient tree, slow and patient, with bark for skin and arms like great branches and soft violet eyes that saw kindness in everything they looked at.

The second was Rocket: small enough to fit in a duffle bag, fast-moving and faster-talking, with mechanical augmentations fitted here and there and a mind that was always working out the angles. Rocket was clever and capable. And far underneath all of that, in a place he didn't let people near, he had been hurt in a way he didn't talk about — taken apart and put back together against his will. The experience had left him with extraordinary skill and a very reasonable suspicion of everyone.

He trusted Groot almost immediately.

It surprised him. But Groot walked beside him on the streets of Xandar without wanting anything, without scheming. Groot was simply there — large and warm and present. And that, it turned out, was what Rocket needed more than he had known.

They began working together. Rocket talked. Groot said "I am Groot." And somehow the conversation always worked out.

Because Rocket understood.

He was the only being in the galaxy who truly understood every shade of Groot's three words. He knew the low, slow "I am Groot" that meant be careful, something is wrong. He knew the high, bright one that meant I've just seen something amazing, come and look. He knew the one that meant I am hungry, and the one that meant I am tired. And he knew the softest one — the one that came after a hard fight, when everyone was safe but worn through — which meant: are you alright?

That one, Rocket always answered. Even when he pretended he hadn't heard it.

In battle they moved like one creature. Groot would grow a wall of bark — WHOMP — and Rocket would scramble onto his shoulder and fire from the high position while the enemy was still looking at the wall. No signal. Just the knowledge of each other, deep as roots.

And then came the day of the great battle above Xandar.

When it was over, the Guardians were alive and Ronan was defeated and Xandar was saved. But scattered in the wreckage were the pieces of Groot — bark and branch and twig, the remains of a gentle giant who had given everything so his friends would survive.

Rocket gathered every piece.

He carried them to the cargo bay of the Milano. He found a small metal pot and filled it with soil. And he planted the twigs.

Then he sat down next to the pot. Every day, he talked to it. He described which sector they were crossing, what Star-Lord had done that was annoying, whether Gamora had said anything interesting. He argued with it. He had strong opinions and Groot had always been willing to disagree, and somehow even with the pot the arguments felt comfortable.

At least once, the others heard him apologize to it. For what, exactly, he never said.

Months went by. And one morning, Rocket came to the cargo bay and looked at the pot — the way he always did, first thing — and he stopped.

A tiny green shoot. Pale and perfect, uncurling from the soil.

He ran through the Milano calling everyone by name. Cargo bay. Right now. No questions.

They crowded in and looked at the small green shoot. It was barely an inch tall.

Drax said, "It is very small."

"I know it's very small," said Rocket. He was not looking at them. He was looking at the shoot. Gamora put her hand on his shoulder.

Groot grew slowly at first, then faster. And by the time he was tall enough to say his three words again, Rocket had been talking to him every single day.

"I am Groot," said Groot, when he was big enough.

Rocket looked up. Did not say anything for a moment.

Then: "Yeah," he said. "I know. Me too."

The galaxy is large and can feel very cold. But a true friend — one who knows every word of your three words, who carries your pieces home when you cannot carry them yourself — makes it feel like the right size.

You have people like that, too. I hope you know who they are.

Goodnight.
