Mockingbird Partnership
S.H.I.E.L.D. paired Clint Barton and Bobbi Morse on a mission that their supervisors considered straightforward.
Their supervisors were wrong, but this was true of many missions that involved either of them individually, and combining them doubled both the effectiveness and the unexpected developments.
Bobbi — codename Mockingbird, though she found this somewhat theatrical — was everything her S.H.I.E.L.D. file suggested and considerably more besides. A biologist with a doctorate she could talk about at length if you gave her the opening, which she did not interpret as an invitation. A hand-to-hand combat specialist whose technique had been described, by an instructor whose opinion held significant weight, as "nearly complete." She carried battle staves: a paired weapon system she had designed and mastered herself, capable of being wielded individually or connected end-to-end for reach and leverage. She moved with the focused efficiency of someone who had thought very carefully about how to be excellent and then been excellent.
She and Clint were both excellent. They were excellent in different ways, which turned out to be the important part.
Clint could engage from distances that Bobbi's combat style didn't naturally reach. Bobbi could operate in close-quarters environments that Clint's bow required him to think differently about. In the field, they covered each other's approaches with the instinctive synchronization that develops between partners who have been in enough hard situations together to stop explaining and start sensing what the other person is about to do.
They also argued. With great frequency and impressive precision. About mission strategy, risk tolerance, the specific situations in which improvisation was acceptable versus the situations in which it was not, and the epistemological question of whether Clint's judgment calls in uncertain environments were evidence of good instincts or insufficient planning. These arguments were productive. They refined each approach. They were also, in retrospect, courtship — though neither of them would have characterized it that way at the time.
They married. This was unusual for two field operatives whose work generated the specific stress load that S.H.I.E.L.D. field work generated, and they managed it with varying degrees of success across the years. They co-founded the West Coast Avengers: a team based in California, providing hero presence in the regions that the East Coast roster couldn't always reach quickly enough. Co-leading a team together brought a different kind of pressure — the management of personal relationship alongside professional authority, the question of how much of one could be separated from the other.
The separation proved, eventually, not fully possible. Bobbi's work carried classified elements she couldn't fully disclose, and the distance those secrets created between people who had otherwise committed to honesty with each other was the kind of distance that grows with time rather than shrinking. The split was painful. The respect never left.
They continued as allies. They continued, in their way, as something that had no clean name but was recognizable from the outside as people who had been something important to each other and had not stopped caring about each other's safety.
Bobbi pushed Clint beyond archery in ways that stayed with him. The close-quarters training she insisted on — because the bow, she argued persuasively, was not always what a situation called for — made him a more complete fighter. He gave her a perspective that cut through the agency-driven analytical frame she brought to everything: the grounded question of what this means for the people who aren't in the briefing room.
The most important weapon in any arsenal is the person standing beside you. They had both believed this. They had been that for each other.
That remained true even after the other things changed.
Partnership amplifies every strength. This is still the most important thing Clint learned from Bobbi Morse, and he learned it completely.
