Vibranium Shield

Once upon a time, in the city of Chicago, near a wide green park called Millennium Park, there stood a reactor plant that hummed quietly through the night. Deep in its lowest vault, it held something rare and valuable: precious metals, kept safe behind thick blast doors, the kind of doors built to withstand almost anything.

Almost anything — but not a man named Carl Creel.

Carl Creel was known to the world as the Absorbing Man, and his power was a strange and difficult one. Whatever he touched, he became. Reach out and touch a stone wall, and his whole body would turn to stone. Press a hand against a steel beam, and his fists would turn to solid iron. That night, Creel pressed his palms against the reactor plant's outer wall, felt his body change to match it, and smashed straight through the blast door as though it were made of paper.

Alarms rang out across the city. And high above the rooftops, someone heard them.

Rogue was the first hero to arrive, flying low and fast over the park, her cape snapping behind her in the wind. And as luck would have it, she was not alone for long — Captain America and Thor happened to be in Chicago that very day for an Avengers meeting, and the moment the alarm sounded, they came running too.

Rogue threw herself at Creel first, punch after careful punch. But something was wrong. Whatever she hit him with, his body simply copied and matched, soaking up every blow like a sponge soaking up water. Nothing she tried seemed to slow him down at all.

That was when Captain America had an idea.

He unfastened the bracer on his arm, walked up beside Rogue, and pressed his bare forearm against hers — carefully, deliberately — for ten full seconds. "Vibranium doesn't just block hits," he told her, steady and calm even with alarms still ringing around them. "It absorbs them. Use it."

Rogue felt something new settle into her left arm — a low, steady hum, like the whole shield's power curling quietly beneath her skin. It didn't feel like stealing. It felt like borrowing something important, just for a little while, exactly when she needed it most.

She turned back to Creel and swung again. And this time, every single blow he threw back at her simply disappeared — the exact same way strikes always vanished harmlessly off the face of Captain America's shield. Creel stared at her, baffled, unable to understand why this girl in front of him would not go down no matter how hard he hit her.

But while Creel stood there confused, something worse was happening behind him. The reactor housing, already cracked from his first attack, had begun leaking dangerous heat toward the vault below — hotter and hotter, second by second.

That was Thor's moment.

He rose into the air, raised Mjolnir high above his head, and brought it down in one single, thunderous strike, sealing the ruptured casing shut with a sound like the sky itself closing a door. The whole crisis, start to finish, was over in under seven minutes.

Carl Creel looked at the three of them standing together — Rogue with her arm still humming faintly, Captain America steady and unshaken, Thor lowering his hammer slowly back to his side — and he decided, wisely, that this was not a fight worth finishing. He turned and ran, and nobody chased him. Some victories don't need a chase. They just need to be won.

As the plant grew quiet again and the borrowed hum faded softly out of Rogue's arm, Captain America turned to her with a thoughtful look on his face.

"You know," he said, "Mjolnir has a way of recognizing people who are truly worthy of it. Don't be surprised if it notices you someday."

Rogue laughed and shook her head, brushing the compliment off the way she often did. But she thought about it the whole flight home to Westchester, turning the idea over and over in her mind like a small, warm coin she could not quite put down.

Maybe someday, she thought. You never really know.

And with that thought tucked safely inside her, Rogue flew on through the quiet night sky, ready for whatever came next. Goodnight, Rogue. You were worthy today, whether the hammer noticed or not.
