Knowhere And The Reality Stone

There are places in the universe that exist because of something strange that happened long ago and left a mark that became a place. A scar that grew walls. A wound that became a home.

Knowhere was like that.

At the outermost edge of the charted universe, a head floated in the dark. Not a small head — the head of a Celestial, one of the most ancient and enormous beings that ever existed, severed from its body in some conflict no living creature fully remembered. Its skull was the size of a city. Its eye sockets stared out at everything and nothing.

Someone had decided to live there.

His name was Taneleer Tivan, though most beings knew him as the Collector — because collecting was his purpose, his passion, the thing that had kept him going across more centuries than most civilizations had managed to exist. He had built his museum inside the great skull of Knowhere, and it stretched for miles through the chambers and corridors of ancient bone: shelves of objects from extinct civilizations, cases of creatures from species that no longer had a homeworld, tanks of things that resisted easy categorization. He had one of everything. From everywhere. Preserved and labeled and kept behind glass, where no harm could come to it.

And at the center of it all, sealed in reinforced crystal and circled by four locking mechanisms, was the Aether.

The Aether was what the universe would later learn to call the Reality Stone. It was not a stone — not yet — but a liquid, deep and dark red, shifting against the inside of its case as though alive and waiting. It was older than the current universe. In an earlier age it had been used by a dark elf named Malekith to try to extinguish the light of the nine realms, until Thor and Jane Foster had stopped him. The Collector had acquired it afterward. He understood what it was and had kept it locked away, because he understood what would happen if it found the wrong hands.

The wrong hands found it anyway. They always do.

The Black Order swept into Knowhere like a storm into an open building — suddenly, completely. Cases cracked. Exhibits scattered in noise and light. And through it all Thanos walked, later and steady, the way someone walks when nothing in the room frightens them.

He found the case. He opened his hand. The Aether came to him, flowing from its crystal housing as though it recognized the quality of his certainty, and as it touched his palm it changed — liquid becoming solid, red deepening into a faceted gem that caught the light of Knowhere's faint glow.

The Reality Stone. Smaller than you would expect, for something that could change the rules of existence.

He set it into the third slot of the Infinity Gauntlet. Three stones, three colors: the purple of Power, the blue of Space, the red of Reality. The gauntlet had grown warm.

The Guardians of the Galaxy arrived then — Gamora, Nebula, Drax, Star-Lord, Mantis — fierce and too late. The stone was already set. With the Reality Stone in the gauntlet, Thanos could bend what was visible around them: solid things going fluid, air becoming walls, the world refusing to be trusted. He showed Gamora. He showed her the way someone who has just gained a terrible power demonstrates it, without understanding that pride in a terrible thing is still a terrible thing.

Then he left. The Collector stood in the ruins of centuries of collecting and thought about the difference between keeping something safe and truly understanding what it needed to be kept safe from.

There is something worth thinking about, as you settle for sleep. The Reality Stone could change appearances — walls into water, ground into sky. But it could not change what was actually true. Thanos could bend what things looked like all he liked. He could not bend the truth of what he was, or what he was doing, or the love that the Avengers carried that would, in the end, answer him.

The Reality Stone could reshape matter. It could not reshape meaning.

Close your eyes. Think of something deeply true about someone you love.

No stone in any universe can bend that. Goodnight.
