Titans Vs Slade

Once upon a time, the Teen Titans met an enemy who did not fight them the way most enemies do.

Most enemies came at you directly. They came with power and a plan. You found the plan's weakness and you broke it and someone won and someone lost and then it was over.

Slade Wilson did not come at them directly. Slade watched.

He wore a mask that was half orange and half black, perfectly divided, and he spoke in the calm measured tone of someone who had decided that patience was the best weapon. He had been observing the Teen Titans since before they knew he existed — studying their instincts, how they responded under pressure, where each person's edges were.

When Slade moved, he moved through the edges of their world: their records, their systems, the routes they used. He turned information into leverage. He looked for the places between things.

Robin felt it most. Slade had studied Robin's tendency to carry the team's outcomes as his own, and he used it, pressing at that responsibility the way you press at a loose stone in a wall to see how much it will move. The weight on Robin during those weeks was something the whole team could see and none could fully take from him. Garfield made sure to be around — a little louder in the common room, a little quicker with the joke that broke the tension, a little more present on the mornings the mission board looked grim. It was small work. But it was the work he knew how to do.

Beast Boy's official work was quiet and unglamorous. He became a green pigeon and sat on Slade's warehouse roof for three hours, watching who came and went. A pigeon. On a roof. For three hours. He was extremely bored. He did not move. He gathered what the team needed.

He became a green spider and threaded through a coastal facility's ventilation, mapping it precisely for Cyborg and Robin outside. He became a sea lion and followed a supply boat across the dark bay at midnight until Raven and Starfire could intercept it from above.

None of it was dramatic. All of it mattered.

The final confrontation came at the industrial port at dawn. Slade was there in person, which was unusual and meant this operation mattered to him. Robin briefed the team in the flat morning light, and they went in.

They were better than a year before. Not just stronger — they fit together now. When Robin went after Slade, he did not need to think about whether his back was covered. It was. When Cyborg planted himself at the entrance, he did not wonder about the aerial agents. Starfire and Raven were already handling them above.

Beast Boy worked the ground between. Green wolf — low and fast, driving agents toward Cyborg's line. Green hawk — cutting the retreat angle at the east pier. When Slade moved for the water and the boat moored at the dock's end, Garfield dove off without hesitation, transformed mid-fall, and hit the bay as a green orca. He surfaced between the boat and open sea and held.

Slade looked at the orca. He looked at the Titans assembled behind him. He found another exit — because he always had another exit.

He escaped.

The Titans stood on the dock in the early morning light. The network was gone, its facilities mapped and reported and shut down. Slade himself was free, somewhere in the city behind them, but diminished — at least for now.

Robin said: "A draw."

Garfield said: "Felt like a win."

Cyborg said: "You're both right."

Raven did not say anything. She sat down on the dock, very quietly, and looked out at the bay. The water was pale and still after the night's work. Starfire came and stood beside her and put one careful hand on her shoulder.

Garfield became a small green cat. He walked over to the dock and sat down right beside Raven, compact and warm.

He did not say anything. He was just there.

The sun came up over Jump City, turning the water from grey to pale gold, and the five Teen Titans sat together on the dock at the end of a long night. A cat and four young heroes, quiet together, letting the morning arrive.

For a little while, that was exactly enough.
