Weaponers Of Qward

Once upon a time, far out among the stars, in the cold and quiet dark between the planets, there drifted a man with nothing left at all.

Sinestro had lost his green ring. He had lost his home on Korugar. He had lost his title as a Green Lantern, the one thing he had worked hardest of all to earn. He drifted through the dark of space, alone, with only his anger to keep him company. But an angry, clever mind does not stay quiet for very long, and soon Sinestro began to search for something new.

He listened to whispers among wanderers and outcasts, until one of them told him of a hidden path — a secret way into another universe entirely. This was the antimatter universe, a strange mirror-world where everything seemed to burn backward, where the light itself looked just a little bit wrong, and where the stars themselves seemed to hum a different, stranger song. Slowly, carefully, Sinestro followed that path, deeper and deeper, until he arrived on a dark planet called Qward.

Qward was home to the Weaponers of Qward, master builders who could forge weapons unlike anything in Sinestro's old universe, weapons that hummed and glowed and crackled with strange new kinds of power. They studied him closely before they let him stay. They saw a former Green Lantern — brilliant, disciplined, still standing tall despite everything he had lost. But they saw something else too, burning quietly beneath his calm expression. They saw rage.

Rage at the Guardians of the Universe, who had judged him unfit. Rage at Korugar, the home that had cast him aside. And rage, soft and constant, at Hal Jordan, the student who had once admired him so completely, and who had done nothing to stop his fall.

The Weaponers of Qward looked at all of that rage and decided that a mind like Sinestro's deserved something new. Something built just for him.

So they went to work at their forges, and after a time, they brought him a ring. But this was not the green ring he once knew. This ring glowed a deep and blazing yellow, warm as a small sun in the palm of his hand.

"A green ring," the Weaponers told him, "draws its power from willpower — from a wearer brave enough to overcome fear. This ring is different. This ring draws its power from fear itself. It grows strong when your enemies grow afraid."

Sinestro looked at the ring for a long moment, turning it over in the low forge-light, weighing everything he had lost and everything this strange new gift might give back to him. Then, slowly, he slid it onto his finger.

The moment it settled into place, power surged through him, warm and enormous, unlike anything he had felt even in his finest days on Oa. He rose up from the floor of the forge and felt, for the first time since his banishment, powerful again. More powerful, in fact, than he had ever been before.

He thought of the Guardians who had stripped away his title. He thought of Hal Jordan, still flying through the skies of Earth in green, still believing that courage alone was enough to keep the universe safe. And Sinestro made himself a quiet, cold promise, right there in the forge-light of Qward: he would prove them wrong. He would show the whole universe that fear could be stronger, faster, and more powerful than hope.

Sinestro rose into the strange antimatter sky above Qward, his new yellow ring blazing bright against the darkness. He was no longer the Green Lantern that Hal Jordan remembered. He was something new now, something the Guardians of the Universe had never trained a single Lantern to face.

And somewhere across the stars, on a small green planet called Oa, the Guardians felt a strange shiver pass through the universe, though they could not yet say why. Even Hal Jordan, flying quietly over the sleeping cities of Earth, felt an odd chill pass through him that night, though he had no idea what had caused it, or who.

Sleep tight tonight, safe and warm in your own bed — while far away among the stars, in a fortress no one back home could even imagine, a new kind of trouble is only just beginning to stir.
