Sinestro Corps

Once upon a time, far out among the stars, in the quiet dark between the planets, a man with a blazing yellow ring decided that one ring was not enough. He wanted an army.

Sinestro set off across the galaxy, drifting from world to world, searching. He was not looking for just any recruits. He was looking for beings who understood fear the way he now did — beings who could make others tremble with nothing more than a look, a word, a shadow falling across a doorway.

On a quiet, shadowed moon, he found a being whose gaze alone could freeze a heart still. On a scarred and silent battlefield, he found a warrior so fierce that entire armies had once turned and fled at the mere mention of his name. On lonely, rocky outposts at the edge of known space, he found still others — clever ones, cold ones, patient ones, each frightening in their own particular way. Sinestro traveled on and on, testing each one he found, patient and careful, the way he had always been patient and careful, even back when he wore green instead of yellow.

To those who impressed him, Sinestro offered a gift: a power ring of their very own, glowing the same deep yellow as his, forged in the same fires far away on the planet Qward. One by one, across a hundred different worlds, new yellow rings began to glow in the dark of space.

Together, they became something new. They became the Sinestro Corps.

It helps, on a quiet night like this, to understand just how different the Sinestro Corps truly was from the Green Lantern Corps that Sinestro had once belonged to. The Green Lantern Corps was built on courage — on choosing to be brave even when you felt afraid, on hope, on believing that doing the right thing mattered. Every Green Lantern wore their ring because they wanted to help.

The Sinestro Corps was the very opposite. It was built on fear instead of courage, on command instead of hope. Its members did not follow Sinestro because they believed in him the way Hal Jordan once had. They followed him because everyone around them was too afraid not to.

Sinestro organized his growing Corps the way a great general organizes an army. He chose the fiercest among his recruits to serve as his lieutenants, and gave each of them a whole sector of the universe to command in his name. He built himself a great stronghold, a fortress hidden deep within his new territory, where he could sit quietly and watch over everything his Corps was becoming, always thinking, always planning several steps ahead.

Word of this new and frightening army began to travel across the stars, drifting from planet to planet the way word of trouble always seems to travel. Worlds that had never once heard the name Sinestro began to whisper it nervously to one another. And on the small green planet of Oa, the Guardians of the Universe heard the news as well, and grew troubled, watching their old officer build something they had never trained him — or anyone — to face.

Far away, on Earth, Hal Jordan heard the reports too. His old teacher, the Green Lantern he had once admired more than any other, was no longer simply an exile drifting through space. He was the leader of a real and terrifying army, one that stood for everything the Green Lantern Corps did not.

Hal did not know exactly when it would happen, or exactly where among the stars it might take place. But he understood, quietly and clearly, that a day was coming when he and his old teacher would meet again — not as mentor and student this time, but as two very different champions of two very different ideas.

And so, for now, the galaxy held its breath. Somewhere among the stars, the Green Lantern Corps kept its steady watch, built on courage and hope, just as it always had. And somewhere else, in a fortress of his own making, Sinestro kept watch too, patient and certain, waiting for his moment.

Sleep well tonight, safe under your own quiet sky — for as long as there are brave hearts willing to hope, the light will always find a way to shine through the fear.
