Power Ring Constructs

Once upon a time, far out among the quiet stars, there lived a Green Lantern named Sinestro who did not carry a green ring like the others. His ring was yellow, and it worked in a very different way, and it had a very different story behind it too.

You see, every Green Lantern ring in the whole Corps is powered by something inside its wearer. For Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern who protects Earth, his ring is powered by willpower and courage — the steady, brave feeling of doing the right thing even when it's hard. But Sinestro's ring was not like that at all. It had been forged far away, on a shadowy planet called Qward, by a group known as the Weaponers of Qward, and it did not answer to courage. It answered to fear.

Whenever Sinestro lifted his hand, his ring searched for fear to feed on — his own fearlessness, and the fright he could stir up in others — and it turned that fear into solid, glowing yellow light. With a simple thought, he could shape that light into anything at all. Heavy chains, clinking softly as they wrapped around an enemy. A cage with bars that hummed. A fist as large as a house. Even, if he wished, a great coiling dragon, wings spread wide, scales shimmering yellow in the starlight.

Sinestro believed, in his heart, that the universe was safer when everyone was a little bit afraid. Afraid enough to behave. Afraid enough to obey. It was a strange thing to believe, and it made him lonely, though he would never have said so out loud. Long ago, the Guardians of the Universe had trusted him above every other Green Lantern in the Corps. Now they only watched him from a careful distance, wishing he had chosen a gentler way.

One quiet evening, high above the planet Oa, home of the Guardians of the Universe, Sinestro decided to test his old student, a Green Lantern named Hal Jordan. He lifted his hand, and his ring answered. Slowly, the yellow light gathered and grew, curling into wings, into claws, into two great glowing eyes — a dragon, enormous and roaring, with jaws wide enough to swallow a whole spaceship. It came sailing toward Hal through the dark of space.

Many pilots, seeing such a thing rushing toward them out of the dark, might have frozen in fear. But Hal Jordan took a slow, steady breath instead. He remembered every lesson Sinestro had ever taught him, back when they trained together on Oa. He remembered that his own ring did not need fear to work. It needed courage — quiet, steady courage, the kind that doesn't shout, the kind that simply stays, even when a dragon is roaring straight toward you.

Hal raised his hand, and his ring answered too. First, a soft green shield bloomed in front of him, gentle as a held breath. Then, calm and sure, he shaped the green light into a single spear, and flew straight and true through the dragon's open jaws. The great yellow construct shivered, then scattered into a thousand tiny sparks, drifting away like dying fireflies in the dark.

Sinestro watched it happen from his ship, his thin mustache twitching with frustration. He could build almost anything with his ring — chains and cages and dragons and walls, each one bigger and more frightening than the last. But there was one thing he could never build, no matter how hard he tried. He could never build real courage. Courage isn't something you can shape out of fear. It only grows quietly, on its own, inside a heart brave enough to hold it.

So Sinestro turned his ship away, disappearing back into the dark between the stars, while Hal Jordan flew home toward Oa, his ring glowing soft and steady and green.

And that is the truth every Green Lantern learns, sooner or later, drifting home beneath a blanket of stars: it doesn't matter how big a construct is, or how many teeth it has, or how loudly it roars. Fear can build a dragon. But courage — quiet, steady, patient courage — can always, always find its way past.

Sleep now, and remember: whatever shape the dark takes, courage finds the crack in it every time.
